C6.5 Appointment of Guardian Ad Litem

Introduction

​​​​​​​​​The court appoints a guardian ad litem (GAL) to represent the best interests of the child.​​

Practice Guidance

Procedure

​The SSW cooperates with the GAL, as appropriate, to include:

  1. Access to requested information printed from the electronic case file, except for referral source, and privileged attorney-client material. GAL may retain copies from the file​;
  2. Access to the child by arranging:
    1. Private meetings with the child if requested by the GAL; and
    2. Transportation for the child to meet with the GAL.


​Related Information

  • The GAL may bill the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (Cabinet/CHFS) for services provided; however, the fee is not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500), and it is paid through the Finance and Administration Cabinet.
